September 2007

If more Americans played golf, perhaps North Dakota could shed its title of “least visited state in the Union.” But few people know that its three, world-class golf courses, with jaw-dropping scenery and adventuresome remoteness, are the Bandon Dunes of the Badlands.

From the Great Plains, we travel to the mountains of central Vermont, where some excellent golf was on display. It was the lodging, however, that stole the show, and we’ll tell you about the boutique resort we found that was, hands down, the best we ever experienced.

Back at sea level, we investigate Ocean City, Md., and its rumored renaissance as a worthwhile retreat. There’s no question that golf is one of its brightest beacons, particularly two courses that you should play twice before playing the others once.
