May 2008

The May issue begins with an intimate look at the golf, lodging and dining scene in lovely Santa Barbara, California. Among the highlights (see page 4) is our first trip to a hidden gem of a golf course an hour outside of Santa Barbara proper and a run down of some of the best local restaurants.

Our report on Mid-Wales takes a journey most golfers never take as most visitors stick to the Northern or Southern portion of the country. With the dollar at record lows, the five courses we visit (average green fee $67 at press time) are a welcome respite. Seniors and women should pay special attention as these courses may be well-suited to your games.

Learn why an easygoing attitude is both the strength and weakness of the Daufuskie Island Resort & Breathe Spa near Hilton Head, South Carolina. Some very good golf, an excellent spa and pet-friendly policies can be found; unfortunately the service is not quite up to par (see pages 10 through 12 for specific examples).

What the Golf World is Talking About includes the secret to getting on Tetherow, a new private club by David McLay Kidd in Bend, Oregon. Speaking of privates, read the details of a special trip to Firestone Country Club to not only see Tiger Woods, but to stay in the clubhouse and play the course under tourney conditions -- and at a discount for Golf Odyssey subscribers. These stories, plus details on new accomodations opening at Old Head.
